After work I spent an hour and half working on removing the stump. Axed a root completely through on the north side of the stump. 

 

Then I used the mattock to start chipping away the dirt at the base of the stump.

 

   I heard  CRACK!  Was it the final piece holding the stump in?  NO it was the mattock handle breaking.  So for those keeping score tree stump 1 me 0.
